Any person except Yale employees, Yale students, and most postdoctoral appointees at the University is eligible.  Individuals holding clinical appointments in the Yale Medical School are eligible (usually only as Associate Fellows). The Yale Corporation expects that Associate Fellows will be individuals of distinction capable of making a contribution to the intellectual and cultural life of the college. Associate Fellows retain their title while teaching college seminars.

Certain Associate Fellows appointments are limited to their term of service at Yale; Corporation, University Council, AYA Board members, Class Secretaries, spouses of residential college Deans, Head of College/co-Head of College of a Harvard House.

A former undergraduate or Fellow of any Yale residential college should be proposed by that college, unless the Head of College  is willing to relinquish the individual to another college.  No graduate of Yale College may become an Associate Fellow until five years after graduation.

V.C.3.  Honorary Fellow

This appointment is limited to current and past Presidents of Yale University. A life term, it applies to all residential colleges.

V.C.4.  Emeritus Fellow

Persons receiving this appointment must hold Emeritus status by action of the Corporation. This appointment is for life.

V.C.5.  Guest Fellow or Guest Fellow in Yale College

A person holding an academic teaching appointment at another institution, whose appointment is comparable to eligible academic positions at Yale, and whose Yale appointment is for 2 years or less, may be a Guest Fellow. Yale College Seminar Teachers or Writing Tutors are appointed as Guest Fellows in the college that sponsors them. Term of appointment is concurrent with the term of teaching at Yale.

V.C.6.  Resident Fellow or Resident Guest Fellow

Resident Fellows and Resident Guest Fellows must be eligible to be a Fellow or Guest Fellow and are selected by the Head of College. Any such individual should:

  • Already be actively involved with undergraduates and show a clear willingness to foster students’ development.
  • Support the Head of College’s expectations for the college.
  • Perform duties delegated by the Head of College that foster interactions with students.
  • Upon request of the Head of College, be “in charge” of the College should both Head of College and Dean be absent.

Resident Fellows must be chosen from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, or administrative officers, or be individuals whose work consistently brings them into regular and close contact with the undergraduates. A Resident Fellow should be qualified to teach in the College Seminar Program.  Appointments are initially for 1 year, renewable from 1 semester to 3 years, but the term of appointment may not extend more than 1 year beyond the incumbent Head of College’s tenure.

V.C.7.  Ineligibility for appointment in any category of fellowship

Non-exempt Yale employees as defined by the Federal Fair Employment Practices Act; Undergraduate, graduate and professional students, unless a student is a College Seminar Teacher; Postdoctoral Fellows and Postdoctoral Associates (Grade I); Medical School interns and assistant residents.
